What is this?
Inclusivi-tee is a Public Benefit Corporation. Our mission is supporting social and environmental justice and kindness through the sale of artist-created t-shirts and bags and the donation of time and money.
Is Inclusivi-tee a for-profit or non-profit organization?
Inclusivi-tee is a Public Benefit Corporation. Basically, this means we are a for profit entity that is required in our charter to promote public good rather than simply maximize profits for shareholders. When I first decided I needed to do something to help make the world a better place and specifically to raise more money for non-profits who are protecting the earth and us, I talked with various business advisors about whether I should make Inclusivi-tee a for-profit or non-profit organization. I was somewhat surprised by the strong encouragement I received to choose for-profit, basically because of the complications involved in setting up a non-profit and the various regulations. Because of this advice, I searched for an option within the corporate world that would allow me to put the good of the world above personal gain.
When I discovered Public Benefit Corporations it felt like the right fit. As part of our business model, we will give 50% of our profits to charities; work with small non-profits to raise money for their work; pay all our employees a livable wage and provide health insurance (when we are large enough to have employees); create t-shirts for non-profits at cost, using our artists; work with other companies that share our passion for social justice; and pay our artists for their work.
At some point in the future, we may add a non-profit foundation. For now, we will try to ensure that every decision we make supports our mission and makes it clear that a corporation can be successful while putting social justice above personal gain.
